The Coldean community has shown remarkable dedication to enhancing local safety through a series of successful fundraising efforts. Their journey began in June 2017 when Coldean committee members raised the necessary funds to contribute towards their first defibrillator, which was part-funded by the Sussex Heart Charity. This lifesaving device was installed at the main entrance of New Larchwood, a local care home, benefiting many residents.
By March 2019, the committee’s ongoing fundraising enabled them to meet the contribution required for a second defibrillator. With additional funding from the Sussex Heart Charity, this device was installed on Park Road, extending coverage to the bottom end of Coldean.
In early 2023, a local community group called ‘Coldean Lighting Up’ identified the need for a third defibrillator in the area. Through their dedicated fundraising efforts, they secured the necessary contribution and with the support of the Sussex Heart Charity, a third defibrillator was installed at the church hall of St Mary Magdalen Church by October 2023.
These defibrillators are registered with The Circuit, the national defibrillator network used by the ambulance service to direct emergency responders to the nearest device. Thanks to these initiatives, Coldean is now better equipped to respond swiftly in an emergency.
