Meet Katherine, who is valued member of the cardiac rehab team at PRH in Haywards Heath and a long-time supporter of the SHC.
Katherine has been at the heart of the SHC annual sponsored walk since its very beginning. Back in 1992, Katherine and her rehab colleagues Mary and Caroline helped set up the first walk for heart patients, which was a big success. As the event grew, Katherine stepped back from the organisational side, but her commitment never wavered – she has continued to promote and attend the walk every year. Amazingly she has only missed one walk since its inception, what a fantastic achievement!
Even in 2020 when our event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 restrictions, Katherine took on her own walking challenge with her sister and raised over £2k for the SHC.
Last year when the walk was held on Star Wars Day (‘May the fourth be with you’!), Katherine and her colleague Corinne brought some fun to the day by dressing up as Jedi! Carrying a collection bucket along the route, they raised a fantastic £137.50.
We’re pleased to welcome Katherine back this year, and we know her former patients, along with all of us, will be very happy to see her again.
Reflecting on what makes the event so meaningful, Katherine says:
“It is a celebration of achievement for our patients & an opportunity to give back to Sussex Heart Charity who greatly support our Cardiac Rehabilitation Services … I really enjoy seeing all our former patients. There is one family in particular who do the walk annually. The dad was one of our patients but sadly died many years ago. His family continue to do the walk in his memory. His wife initially brought her children along & is now joined by their grandchildren. This is one of the many reasons that the walk is so special.”
