We would like to say a big thank you to Nick and Carey who are currently fundraising for the SHC. In 2024 Nick had a cardiac arrest and amazingly he has just completed an Ultramarathon – what an incredible achievement! Nick didn’t want the added pressure of fundraising while he was preparing for the race, but after completing the challenge and seeing how much support he got from his friends and family, his wife Carey suggested he should raise some money for a charity – and we thank them for choosing the SHC.
Here’s a little bit more on their story in Carey’s words:
“On 4th December 2024 my husband, Nick, had a cardiac arrest whilst we were both asleep in bed. Luckily, I realised what had happened and was able to start CPR immediately. Paramedics arrived swiftly and within 18 minutes were able restart Nick’s heart. He then had a 2 week stay in hospital and was discharged with an internal defibrillator.
He has run for many years and had been training for the 2025 race around the time he had his cardiac arrest. It is down to his quiet determination, resilience and tenacity that he decided to start re-training again to undertake this challenge.
We chose Sussex Heart Charity (SHC) as Nick directly benefitted from their support following his cardiac arrest… We have asked for any money raised to be used to help a new project called ‘Rescue Ready’. Every second counts in a cardiac emergency… and Nick is the absolute testament to receiving swift CPR”

We are delighted to report that Nick and Carey have already raised over £2,250 – which is a fantastic amount. We thank them and their friends, family and colleagues for their amazing fundraising efforts. We really appreciate the very generous support.
Our Rescue Ready project supplies free CPR and AED awareness sessions to local communities and Nick and Carey’s story shows just how vital early intervention can be and how important it is to have the skills and confidence to help in an emergency.
