Happy International Nurses’ Day!
Today we celebrate all the incredible cardiac nurses across Sussex and thank them for the vital role they play in delivering exceptional cardiac healthcare. ❤️
To mark the occasion, we’re shining a spotlight on two of our amazing nurses from Royal Sussex County Hospital, both of whom are valued SHC supporters…
Meet Karen… a valued member of the cardiac rehabilitation team. Karen began working at the cardiac centre in 1993, starting on the ITU/CCU ward before moving into cardiac rehabilitation, where she has spent more than 25 years supporting patients through recovery and helping them regain confidence after cardiac events.

Today, Karen is the longest-serving rehab nurse specialist in Brighton, bringing decades of experience, compassion and clinical expertise to every patient she meets. Over the years, Karen has seen huge changes in cardiac care, but one thing has never changed – her commitment to supporting patients throughout their recovery journey. Her calm reassurance, wealth of knowledge and genuine compassion make her an invaluable member of the rehab team and a trusted source of support for patients and colleagues alike.
Karen is pictured last month collecting SHC funded heart monitors for the rehab exercise classes and volunteering at this year’s SHC sponsored walk.
Meet Louise… one of the surgical pre-assessment nurses, whose dedication to patient care has helped transform the experience of people preparing for cardiac surgery.
Recognising that facing heart surgery can be an incredibly anxious and stressful time for patients and their families, Louise played a key role in developing and launching the innovative Surgery School initiative. Designed to support patients’ psychological wellbeing and physical preparation, Surgery School has become an invaluable part of the cardiac surgery pathway.

Louise now helps organise the events and speaks at the sessions, sharing her expertise and offering compassionate support to patients at what can often be one of the most challenging times in their lives. Recently, Louise presented at the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery (SCTS) conference, sharing the impact and success of Surgery School – what a fantastic achievement. 👏
Louise is pictured at the conference, held in Belfast earlier this year.
Today we recognise the amazing contributions of Karen, Louise and all the fantastic cardiac nurses across Sussex – thank you for your dedication, expertise and commitment to patient care. You make a real difference every day. ❤️ ❤️
