South East based pension and discretionary investment managers Hurley Partners, have handed over a cheque for a staggering £20,000 to The Sussex Heart Charity, specifically to assist in the funding of state of the art life-saving cardiac equipment at Brighton’s Royal Sussex County Hospital.
Through the generosity of clients and friends at its annual Charity Golf Day and at a special Cricket Legends Dinner in June 2018, sums in excess of £43,000 were raised with the largest single donation going to the Sussex Heart Charity.
Director and Brighton resident Julie Sebastianelli said:
“My husband Steve has been very ill and through the brilliant care and attention of the whole team at Brighton, from consultants and pharmacists to all the specialist nursing staff, he is here today – testament to their skill and dedication. On behalf of Steve, and our two daughters, I’d like to thank everyone who has been with Steve every step of the way.”
“Being able to assist The Sussex Heart Charity in the purchase of new equipment that will ‘Save Lives In Sussex’, gives us all at Hurley Partners so much pleasure. In five years we have raised over £170,000, the majority of which has helped fund specific projects at NHS hospitals in the South East.”
The equipment that the department will purchase is known as an ECMO machine and Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon and Co-Chair of The Sussex Heart Charity Mike Lewis explains:
“The ECMO machine is a modified heart-lung machine that pumps and oxygenates a patient’s blood, thus allowing the heart and lungs to rest. The machine drains the blood from the patient, adds the oxygen whilst removing carbon dioxide and then returns the blood to the artery and “pumps” the blood through the body. This new ECMO technology has already been piloted in a few centres in the UK and has now developed to the point that it is more widely applicable. Thanks to Hurley and Partners, patients will now have ready access to this ECMO technology. ECMO will save lives in Sussex.”
