In 2020, as I faced my heart procedure amidst the uncertainties of the COVID-19 pandemic, I was filled with anxiety and apprehension. With no family allowed to accompany me due to restrictions, I felt particularly alone. However, during my time on the cardiac ward, I met a wonderful cardiac nurse named Ruth, whose kindness made a significant difference. Ruth gave me a comforting gift—a beautiful silver wand adorned with a shining star. She told me this star symbolised my inner strength and resilience, and she attached a small card to the wand with a message that I have treasured ever since.
Working for the Sussex Heart Charity over the past year has been an incredible experience. I’ve had the privilege of meeting many individuals on their heart journeys, each with their own stories of courage and perseverance. One person who stood out to me was Ann, a lovely lady who consistently supports our charity walks with her husband. When I first met Ann, I noticed a hint of sadness as she navigated her own heart journey. Feeling a deep sense of connection, I decided it was time to pass on the star wand to someone who might need it just as much as I did.
I gave the star wand to Ann, sharing its story and significance. She was deeply touched and promised to pass it on once she felt strong enough. Before doing so, Ann asked me to write my name on the card attached to the star, which I did with heartfelt emotion.
During the Sussex Heart Charity Walk in 2024, I met Charlotte, a young lady who was preparing for open-heart surgery at Brighton. She expressed her fears about the upcoming procedure, and I introduced her to several of the fantastic cardiac staff who would be supporting her. I also introduced Charlotte to Ann, and they formed a bond over their shared experiences.
As a gesture of solidarity, Ann decided to pass the star wand to Charlotte. She added her name to the card and shared the story of the wand’s journey, symbolising strength and support. Charlotte now holds the star wand and will continue to do so until she feels ready to pass it along to someone else in need.
Charlotte is pictured here in her garden holding the star wand, as well as with Ann at our charity walk in May this year. We are thrilled to share that Charlotte has since undergone successful open-heart surgery and is now recovering at home with her family. We extend our warmest wishes and support to her as she continues her journey.
The star wand represents a powerful symbol of hope, strength, and community. It is a reminder of the incredible cardiac staff who support each and every patient and the shared experiences that bind us together. The star may one day end up in your hands—please remember the many individuals who have touched its journey and the remarkable staff who make a difference every day.
With heartfelt thanks and best wishes,
Carolyn
