At the SHC, we believe that real impact can often start with small, practical details. That’s why we were delighted to fund 40 brand-new chairs for Mouslecoomb Leisure Centre to support the Brighton cardiac rehabilitation team.
For patients recovering from major cardiac events, heart surgery, or managing ongoing heart conditions, regaining physical confidence is vital on the road to recovery. The cardiac rehab team run exercise classes at Moulsecoomb Leisure Centre four times a week, providing a safe, structured space for patients to build up their strength under specialist guidance.
While it might be a simple piece of furniture, a reliable chair is actually an essential resource in that recovery process.
Why Chairs Matter
Chairs are an essential part of every cardiac rehab exercise class. They keep patients safe, stable and supported across a wide variety of activities:
- Strength-Building: Used for foundational sit-to-stand exercises that safely rebuild lower body strength.
- Adaptable Workouts: Acting as a stable base for lower-intensity, chair-based cardio and resistance exercises.
- Paced Recovery: Providing an essential place to rest, monitor heart rates, and engage in the vital end-of-session cooling down and relaxation periods.
Pictured below are some of the rehab team and patients using the new chairs for their end of session cool-down.

Supporting Rehab – and the Mouslecoomb Community
The old chairs were in need of an upgrade, but unfortunately, Freedom Leisure didn’t have the resources to fund new equipment. We were therefore delighted to step in and fund a brand-new stack of chairs.
The new chairs will provide valuable support to the rehabilitation team, helping them to deliver sessions in a safe, comfortable and welcoming environment for patients. They will also be available for wider use across the leisure centre, benefiting the local community.
Small Change, Big Impact
Everyone is already enjoying the upgrade! Not only do the new chairs look good, but they also feature easy-to-clean plastic surfaces. This might sound like a simple detail, but it is highly practical for maintaining the high standard of infection prevention and control required for clinical community classes.
Most importantly, the new chairs instantly improved the day-to day experience for heart patients by helping to create a more welcoming space for everyone as they work hard on their recovery.
“A heartfelt thankyou to the charity for providing new chairs for our cardiac rehabilitation patients.
Our previous chairs were very worn and no longer suitable for our needs. The new chairs are clean and comfortable and are a great addition for our classes at the Mouslecoomb Leisure Centre.
We are incredibly grateful for the funding. Chairs may seem like a simple piece of equipment, but the new chairs will really benefit our patients by helping them feel comfortable and reassured when they attend their exercise sessions” – Martina (Cardiac Rehab Lead)

A huge thank you to Tina and everyone at the leisure centre for helping us make this happen.
We’re proud to support local heart patients, the dedicated cardiac rehab team and the Moulsecoomb Leisure Centre and community ❤️❤️
