You can help: Taking part in one of our fundraising events. Organising fundraising events on our behalf. Making a donation. Making a Bequest . Your support will enable us to continue to bring the best care possible to cardiacpatients and their families in Sussex

You’ve got one; I’ve got one it beats out the rhythm of life. Most of the time, we pay no mind to and take for granted that it will do its duty and support us through our lives and our children’s lives while we get on with the business of living and making important plans for the future. Who would think that a little pump if it stopped, would eradicate all of our plans hopes and dreams. So, what has all this got to do with motorcycles?
Co-organiser of Brightona Abby Goldin, sums up the organising committees ambition for this year’s Brightona bike rally, in a single sentence “double the attendance double the fun, double the money raised for The Sussex Heart Charity”

What is Brightona? It’s a motorcycle event held every year on Brighton’s famous Madeira Drive which was originally built for speed trials. It includes obviously motor bikes/hot rods/stalls/memorabilia/live music, a great meeting place and a lots of fun with a great backdrop of the sea coast and the famous Brighton Pier, and all for a good cause that one day could benefit you or your loved ones.

Last year Brightona raised over £20,000 for the Sussex Heart Charity which was used to purchase a Harmonic Scalpel, this had been requested by Cardiothoracic surgeons and will change the way some heart operations are carried out and will help pave the way in bringing laparoscopic (keyhole Cardiac) surgery to the Sussex Cardiac Centre in Brighton.
Other benefits include: 1) because the harmonic scalpel uses no electrical energy, it can be used on patients that have pacemakers and internal defibrillators and also operates safely near metal clips, staples and instruments. 2) Reduces tissue damage that can occur using he current mono-polar diathermy equipment. 3) By sealing as it cuts the harmonic scalpel reduces blood flow, which can obscure the surgeon’s visions during an operation. Less invasive surgery = quicker recovery.
But purchasing this type of equipment never comes cheap so the aim for Brightona 2008 is More Fun! More Bikes! More People = More Money for the Sussex Heart Charity

BRIGHTONA 2006

Following the huge success of this year’s Brightona Motorcycle event on Madeira Drive on October 8th, a huge donation of £12,500 and a plaque were presented by Brighton & Hove City Council’s Deputy Mayor Bob Carden and the Brightona team to the Brighton Heart Support Trust.

The cheque was gratefully received by cardiac surgeon Andrew Cohen and will add vital funds to the Sussex Cardiac Centre’s New Day Case Ward based at the city’s Royal Sussex County Hospital in Eastern Road.

The hardworking doctors and nurses of the ward were also treated to the unusual site of a custom Harley Davidson Night Train motorcycle on the 10th level of the Royal County Hospital! The bike, which is owned by Mat Barnard, one of Brightona’s organisers, was on this occasion propelled by man power rather than its own steam.

Chris Green Project
Chris Green is a songwriter, and has had heart surgery at the Sussex County Hospital. He has just released his debut album, and a donation is being made from the sales of this CD, to the Brighton Heart Support Trust.

2006 Sponsored Walk

A big thank you to all that supported our annual sponsored walk either by donating or taking part we were once again very fortunate with the weather and hopefully everybody enjoyed the day the running total received so far is a fantastic £30,826.10

This was our 15th year of organising this walk and each year we continue to see the numbers of participants grow, which in turn increases the amount of sponsor money raised. Many of our walkers have supported us continuously since our first walk in 1992 and of course there are always newer walkers that have been unfortunate to have suffered from cardiac problems more recently.

But whatever your circumstances and whether this was your 1st or 15th year of supporting us, you have helped raise over £200,000. We thank you for this and hope you are able to continue to attend these walks and support us for many years to come.

We have set the date of next years walk which will be on Sunday 13th May. Obviously the aim is to raise money for the Brighton Heart Support Trust, but, it is always good to see old and new friends so please come along next year and if you are able to raise money at the same time that's even better. Also remember you are not only raising money you are also raising awareness of this charity existence amongst your friends and neighbours, so your support will be invaluable in enabling us to continue helping to support cardiac services and patients in Sussex for many years to come.

Donation from Brighton & Hove High School, Junior School

On the 21st June the school very kindly presented us with a cheque for £500.00, which was money raised by the pupils. The school raises money for many charities, and we were fortunate enough to be chosen on this occasion.

The money will be used to purchase a radial chair that will be used by patients that have undergone Angiography via a radial artery, and are able to sit up immediately after treatment.

These day care patients are currently recuperating on a bed, so these funds will also free up a hospital bed.

Bikers presentation to Brighton Heart Support Trust

Sunday the 13th March saw the presentation of an electric bed and portable Blood Pressure Monitor to Brighton heart Support Trust. £1,200 was raised by a committee of Harley Davidson riders from no specific club or chapter
