You’ve
got one; I’ve got one it beats out the rhythm of life. Most of the
time, we pay no mind to and take for granted that it will do its duty
and support us through our lives and our children’s lives while
we get on with the business of living and making important plans for the
future. Who would think that a little pump if it stopped, would eradicate
all of our plans hopes and dreams. So, what has all this got to do with
motorcycles? What is Brightona? It’s a motorcycle event held every year on Brighton’s famous Madeira Drive which was originally built for speed trials. It includes obviously motor bikes/hot rods/stalls/memorabilia/live music, a great meeting place and a lots of fun with a great backdrop of the sea coast and the famous Brighton Pier, and all for a good cause that one day could benefit you or your loved ones. Last year
Brightona raised over £20,000 for the Sussex Heart Charity which
was used to purchase a Harmonic Scalpel, this had been requested by Cardiothoracic
surgeons and will change the way some heart operations are carried out
and will help pave the way in bringing laparoscopic (keyhole Cardiac)
surgery to the Sussex Cardiac Centre in Brighton. www.brightona.net
KEEP THE HEARTBEAT BEATING
BRIGHTONA 2006
The cheque was gratefully received by cardiac surgeon Andrew Cohen and will add vital funds to the Sussex Cardiac Centre’s New Day Case Ward based at the city’s Royal Sussex County Hospital in Eastern Road. The hardworking doctors and nurses of the ward were also treated to the unusual site of a custom Harley Davidson Night Train motorcycle on the 10th level of the Royal County Hospital! The bike, which is owned by Mat Barnard, one of Brightona’s organisers, was on this occasion propelled by man power rather than its own steam.
A charity
concert was also arranged in aid of the Brighton Heart Support Trust. Chris Green presented the ‘large’ cheque to the Brighton Heart Support Trust at the Sussex County Hospital in Brighton with both of his heart specialists in attendance – Mr. Trevidi and Dr. De Belder (see photo left to right: Dr. De Belder, Chris Green, Mr. Trevidi) The Trust intends to buy portable heart monitoring equipment with the money to help monitor patients whilst away from the hospital. This was our 15th year of organising this walk and each year we continue to see the numbers of participants grow, which in turn increases the amount of sponsor money raised. Many of our walkers have supported us continuously since our first walk in 1992 and of course there are always newer walkers that have been unfortunate to have suffered from cardiac problems more recently. But whatever your circumstances and whether this was your 1st or 15th year of supporting us, you have helped raise over £200,000. We thank you for this and hope you are able to continue to attend these walks and support us for many years to come. We have set the date of next years walk which will be on Sunday 13th May. Obviously the aim is to raise money for the Brighton Heart Support Trust, but, it is always good to see old and new friends so please come along next year and if you are able to raise money at the same time that's even better. Also remember you are not only raising money you are also raising awareness of this charity existence amongst your friends and neighbours, so your support will be invaluable in enabling us to continue helping to support cardiac services and patients in Sussex for many years to come. Donation from Brighton & Hove High School, Junior School
The money will be used to purchase a radial chair that will be used by patients that have undergone Angiography via a radial artery, and are able to sit up immediately after treatment. These day care patients are currently recuperating on a bed, so these funds will also free up a hospital bed.
