Automated External Defibrillator Training

The Sussex Heart Charity is a leader in the field of Automated External Defibrillator (AED) training.

We provide training to doctors, dentists, staff within industrial and retail complexes, community groups, and Sussex Police. We work closely with the South East Coast Ambulance Service and their Public Access Defibrillator scheme, and with community and professional groups throughout the County.

Each course lasts between 2½-3 hours with a maximum of 6 candidates.

The course is for both clinical and non-clinical staff working within the NHS or private health care. Automated external defibrillation is the only effective therapy for cardiac arrest caused by ventricular fibrillation.

The scientific evidence to support early defibrillation is overwhelming. The single most important determinant of survival is the time delay from collapse to delivery of the first shock. The chances of successful defibrillation decline at a rate of 7-10% with each minute. Basic life support may help to sustain ventricular fibrillation but is not a definitive treatment.

The course is informative and enjoyable, thus allowing participants to gain confidence in what is a new and possibly somewhat daunting skill.

Cost

The cost of this course when run at your premises for a group of up to 6 students is £170 including VAT. This cost is subsidised by the Sussex Heart Charity

By the end of the course, each participant should be able to demonstrate the sequence of actions and skills required to use an AED during the simulated resuscitation of an adult victim.

The course covers:

  • Recognition of a heart attack
  • What Ventricular Fibrillation is, and a brief explanation of the heart’s electrical activity
  • Basic Life Support
  • Explanation of what a defibrillator does and how it works
  • Operation of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) including hazards and safety advice
