Automated External Defibrillator Training

Defibrillator

Heartguard is a leader in the field of instructing in the use of Automated External Defibrillators.

We instruct staff working in doctors' and dental surgeries, industrial and retail complexes, as well as community groups and the Sussex Police. We are working closely with the South East Coast Ambulance Service (Link) in the setting up of public access defibrillator schemes and the training of community and professional groups throughout the County. The Heartguard Training package is comprehensive. Each course lasts between 2½-3 hours with a maximum of 6 candidates.

This course is for clinical or non clinical staff working for the NHS or a private Health Care Organisation, to receive updates on the latest guidelines from the British Resuscitation Council and prove competent in BLS and Automatic External Defibrillator (AED). Automated External Defibrillation (AED) is well established as the only effective therapy for cardiac arrest.

The scientific evidence to support early defibrillation is overwhelming, the single most determinant of survival being the delay from collapse to delivery of the first shock. The chances of successful defibrillation decline at a rate of 7-10% with each minute. Basic life support may help to sustain a shockable rhythm but is not a definitive treatment.

Philips HeartStart AED Defibrillator

We offer a comprehensive Automated External Defibrillation (AED) programme based on the necessary theory, backed up with lots of practical sessions. The course is run over half a day, and is made as informative, yet as enjoyable as possible, thus allowing the students to gain confidence in what is a new and possibly somewhat daunting skill.

Training conforms to current Resuscitation Council (UK) guidelines.

Cost

The cost of this course when run at your premises for a group of up to 6 students is £160 including VAT.

Please note the cost is subsidized by the Sussex Heart Charity and only covers our expenses.

On completion of training in the use of an AED the candidate should be able to demonstrate the sequence of actions and skills required to use an AED during the simulated resuscitation of an adult victim who has suffered a cardiac arrest.

This will be assessed during or at the end of the training using a simulated incident and a resuscitation training manikin. We are very flexible, able to arrange training to suit your requirements.

The course is suitable for all staff working within GP or Dental Practices and Nursing Homes. For more information on the Cardiac Science G3 AED click on picture below.

The syllabus consists of:

Cardiac Science G3 AED
  • Recognition of a heart attack
  • Explanation of physiology of a heart attack
  • Definition of Ventricular Fibrillation including an account of the electrical activity within the heart
  • How to recognise absence of respirations and cardiac arrest
  • Instruction in how to administer mouth to mouth respirations and cardiac arrest
  • Explanation of what a defibrillator does and how it works
  • Operation of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) including hazards and safety advice
